Introducing Catherine Doherty

Catherine Doherty (1896–1985), born Ekaterina Fyodorovna Kolyschkine in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, was a Catholic lay mystic, social worker, and founder of the Madonna House Apostolate. Raised in an aristocratic family, she witnessed the turmoil of the Russian Revolution and became a refugee, eventually finding a new home in Canada. After moving to Canada, she devoted herself to helping the poor and marginalized, founding Friendship House in Toronto in 1930, which aimed to serve the needy, particularly in areas of racial tension. Doherty's passion for interfaith dialogue and social justice led her to create another Friendship House in Harlem, New York. In 1947, with her second husband, Eddie Doherty, she founded the Madonna House Apostolate in Combermere, Ontario, a lay community that combined monastic traditions with active service.
