Introducing Wodehouse

Pelham Grenville Wodehouse, commonly known as P.G. Wodehouse, was born on October 15, 1881, in Guildford, Surrey, England. He was the third of four sons born to Henry Ernest Wodehouse, a British magistrate in Hong Kong, and Eleanor Deane. Wodehouse spent much of his early childhood in Hong Kong, but at the age of three, he was sent back to England with his brothers to be raised by relatives and attend boarding schools, a common practice for colonial families at the time. He attended Dulwich College, where he excelled academically and developed a love for writing and sports, particularly cricket and boxing. Financial constraints prevented him from attending university, so he took a job as a bank clerk in London, which he found tedious and uninspiring, prompting him to pursue writing as a career.

Wodehouse began his writing career as a freelance journalist and contributor to various magazines, including Punch. His first novel, The Pothunters, was published in 1902, marking the start of a prolific career that spanned over seven decades. He gained widespread fame for creating iconic characters such as Jeeves, the ingenious valet, and Bertie Wooster, his bumbling aristocratic employer, who first appeared in the short story "Extricating Young Gussie" in 1915. Wodehouse’s writing is characterized by its lighthearted humor, intricate plots, and a whimsical portrayal of the British upper class. His works, including series like the Blandings Castle saga and standalone novels, often feature absurd situations, witty dialogue, and a timeless charm that transcends generations. Over his lifetime, he wrote more than 90 books, numerous short stories, plays, and musical lyrics, collaborating with figures like Jerome Kern and Guy Bolton for Broadway productions.
