Introducing Sonia Williams
Sonia Suzette Williams was a distinguished Barbadian theatre artist, educator, writer, and activist. Born on January 17, 1967, in Pleasant Hall, St. Peter, Barbados, she migrated to Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 12. Initially intending to study law, she discovered her passion for theatre at Hamilton College under the mentorship of Carol Bellini-Sharpe. Sonia returned to the Caribbean, where she became a critically acclaimed director, performer, and educator in Caribbean culture. She taught at institutions such as the University of the West Indies Cave Hill, Barbados Community College, and the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts.
Throughout her career, she received several accolades, including a Watson Fellowship to Nigeria in 1989 and the Governor General Award for Excellence in Drama in 1998. Sonia Williams passed away on January 6, 2024, at the age of 56.
