Introducing Richard Pryor

Richard Pryor was born Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor III on December 1, 1940, in Peoria, Illinois, to Gertrude L. Thomas, a prostitute, and LeRoy "Buck Carter" Pryor, a bartender, boxer, and World War II veteran. His early life was marked by hardship and trauma. Abandoned by his mother at age ten, Pryor was raised by his grandmother, Marie Carter, in the brothel she operated. His childhood was far from conventional—surrounded by the gritty realities of poverty, vice, and violence, he experienced sexual abuse by a teenage neighbor at age six and later by a local preacher. These formative years in Peoria’s red-light district shaped his worldview and provided raw material for his later comedy. A bright but rebellious child, Pryor was expelled from school at 14 and took on various odd jobs, including truck driver and meat packer, before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1958. His military stint was short-lived, ending after two years with a discharge for fighting a fellow soldier.
