Rachel Joyce, born in 1962 in South East London, is a British author renowned for her international bestsellers. She grew up with her two younger sisters, Amy and Emily, engaging in imaginative games and reading authors like Beatrix Potter and Joan Aiken.
Before her writing career, Joyce spent two decades as an actress, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. She later transitioned to writing, creating numerous radio plays for BBC Radio 4, including adaptations of classic novels. In 2007, she jointly won the Tinniswood Award for best original audio drama.
Her debut novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2012), was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize. This success was followed by novels such as Perfect (2013), The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy (2014), The Music Shop (2017), and Miss Benson's Beetle (2020), which won the 2021 Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize. Her works have sold over five million copies worldwide and have been translated into thirty-six languages.
In addition to her novels, Joyce has written a collection of interlinked short stories titled A Snow Garden & Other Stories (2015). Her novel Maureen Fry and the Angel of the North. Joyce's debut novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, has been adapted into a major film starring Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton, with Joyce also writing the screenplay.
