Introducing Madalyn Murray O'Hair

Madalyn Murray O'Hair (1919–1995) was an American activist known for her staunch advocacy of atheism and the separation of church and state. She founded American Atheists in 1963 and played a key role in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Murray v. Curlett, which led to the removal of mandatory Bible readings in public schools. Often referred to as "America’s most hated woman" due to her outspoken criticism of religion, O’Hair dedicated her life to promoting secularism and fighting religious influence in government. In 1995, she, along with her son Jon and granddaughter Robin, was tragically kidnapped and murdered by a former employee. Despite her controversial reputation, O’Hair remains a significant figure in the history of American atheism and secular activism.
