Introducing James Robertson

James Robertson, born in 1958 in Kent, England, and raised in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, is a celebrated Scottish writer whose work spans novels, poetry, and children’s literature, often weaving themes of Scottish history and identity. After studying History at Edinburgh University and earning a PhD on Walter Scott, he became a full-time author in 1993, producing notable novels like The Testament of Gideon Mack (longlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize) and Joseph Knight (winner of two major Scottish book awards in 2003/04). A champion of the Scots language, he co-founded Itchy Coo in 2002 to publish children’s books and runs Kettillonia, an independent press launched in 1999. With a career enriched by residencies at the Scottish Parliament and elsewhere, Robertson lives with his wife Marianne in Scotland, drawing from its landscapes and culture to craft his distinctive narratives.
