Introducing Hegel

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born on August 27, 1770, in Stuttgart, Germany. He grew up in a middle-class Protestant family and received a strong classical education. Hegel attended the Tübinger Stift, a Protestant seminary, where he studied philosophy and theology. During his time there, he developed friendships with future intellectual giants like Friedrich Hölderlin and Friedrich Schelling. These friendships influenced his philosophical ideas, particularly his early interest in German Idealism. Hegel’s philosophy was shaped by the works of Immanuel Kant, Johann Gottlieb Fichte, and Baruch Spinoza. He was also deeply influenced by Greek philosophy, especially the dialectical method of Plato and Aristotle. Unlike Kant, who emphasized the limits of human knowledge, Hegel sought to create a system where reason could fully grasp reality. His approach, often referred to as Absolute Idealism, aimed to integrate all aspects of existence—nature, history, and thought—into a single, rational framework.
