Introducing Georgette Heyer

Georgette Heyer (1902–1974) was an English novelist best known for her historical romance novels, particularly those set in the Regency era. She essentially pioneered the Regency romance subgenre, blending meticulous historical detail with witty dialogue and engaging plots. Born in Wimbledon, London, she began writing as a teenager, with her first novel, The Black Moth (1921), published when she was just 19. Over her career, she wrote more than 50 books, including romances, historical fiction, and detective stories.

Her Regency novels, like Devil’s Cub (1932) and Friday’s Child (1944), are celebrated for their richly drawn characters, humor, and authenticity—Heyer was known for her obsessive research into the period’s customs, fashion, and slang. Beyond romance, she also penned Georgian-era novels and a series of mysteries featuring Superintendent Hannasyde and Inspector Hemingway. Though she shunned publicity and rarely gave interviews, her work has endured, influencing countless romance writers and delighting readers with its charm and precision.
