“ Though the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small. Though with patience He stands waiting, with exactness grinds He all. “

Though the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small. Though with patience He stands waiting, with exactness grinds He all.

Introducing Friedrich von Logau

Friedrich von Logau (1605–1655) was a Baroque-era German poet and epigrammatist born in Silesia, known for his sharp, satirical epigrams that critiqued the chaos of the Thirty Years’ War, courtly life, and cultural pretensions of his time. Orphaned early, he studied law at Altdorf after attending Brieg’s gymnasium, later managing his family’s estates before serving as a ducal councillor in Liegnitz. Married twice, he fathered children amidst personal and financial struggles, finding literary outlet in over 3,000 epigrams published as Erstes Hundert Teutscher Reimensprüche (1638) and Deutscher Sinn-Getichte Drey Tausend (1654) under the pseudonym Salomon von Golaw. A member of the Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft, Logau’s direct, witty style—rediscovered in 1759 by Lessing and Ramler—cemented his legacy as a significant voice of 17th-century German literature, blending moral depth with social commentary.
