Quotes by Friedrich von Hügel
Introducing Friedrich von Hügel
Friedrich von Hügel (1852–1925) was an Austrian-born Roman Catholic lay theologian and religious writer, widely recognized for his profound influence on modern Christian spirituality and theological thought. Born in Florence, Italy, to a noble Austrian diplomat, von Hügel spent most of his life in England, where he became an important bridge between traditional Catholic doctrine and emerging modernist thought.
Despite never holding an official academic or clerical position, he was a prolific thinker and correspondent, engaging deeply with issues of faith, science, and historical criticism. He is best known for his magnum opus, The Mystical Element of Religion as Studied in Saint Catherine of Genoa and Her Friends (1908), in which he developed a threefold model of religion encompassing the institutional, intellectual, and mystical dimensions—a framework still discussed in contemporary theology.
