Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard was born on September 28, 1839, in Churchville, New York. She was the daughter of Josiah Flint Willard and Mary Thompson Hill Willard. Her family moved to Oberlin, Ohio, when she was a young child, and later settled in Janesville, Wisconsin. Her upbringing in a devoutly religious family influenced her strong moral convictions and social conscience. Willard attended Milwaukee Female College and later transferred to the North Western Female College in Evanston, Illinois, where she graduated in 1859. Her education focused on literature, history, and science, and she quickly became known for her intelligence and leadership abilities.
