Claudia Rankine, born on January 1, 1963, in Kingston, Jamaica, is a distinguished American poet, essayist, playwright, and multimedia artist. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from Williams College and her Master of Fine Arts in poetry from Columbia University.
Rankine has authored five poetry collections, notably "Citizen: An American Lyric" (2014), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Poetry and was a finalist for the National Book Award. Her other works include "Don't Let Me Be Lonely: An American Lyric" (2004) and "Nothing in Nature is Private" (1994).
In 2016, Rankine co-founded The Racial Imaginary Institute, aiming to explore the construct of race and its implications in society.
